Senate Republicans Confirm “Selloff Steve” Pearce to Lead BLM, Handing Extractive Special Interests Keys to America's Public Lands

Approval Gives Burgum Another Anti-Public Lands Crony Ready To Carry Out His Fail-By-Design Plan

HELENA, MTToday, Senate Republicans voted to confirm “Selloff Steve” Pearce as Director of the Bureau of Land Management “en bloc,” using a fast-tracked process to hand stewardship of 245 million acres of Americans’ public lands and 700 million sub-surface acres to a deeply-conflicted and out-of-touch politician. Pearce has spent his career trying to sell off our public lands and made upwards of $1 million last year from the very oil and gas industries he will now regulate.

In response, Save Our Parks Spokesperson Jayson O’Neill issued the following statement:

“Today’s vote by Senate Republicans is a betrayal of every American who has ever fished a river, hunted using public access, or recreated on public lands. Selloff Steve Pearce was named one of Congress’s ‘most corrupt members’ for a reason. No doubt his efforts to sell off public lands and this pattern of corruption will continue at the BLM where he now regulates the very oil and gas industry where he continues to maintain deep financial ties.

“Every Western senator who voted yes defied their constituents after polling showed 75% of voters opposed this nomination. With Pearce now confirmed, Doug Burgum’s fail-by-design plan to dismantle America’s great outdoors has a key partner in place at the BLM. We will be watching Pearce’s every move, fighting tooth and nail to keep our public lands in public hands.”
