Senate Committee Advances “Selloff Steve” Pearce On Party-Line Vote Despite Overwhelming Public Opposition and Disqualifying Conflicts
Senators Vote Against Their Constituents’ Interests to Advance Burgum Crony
HELENA, MT – Today, the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee voted to advance “Selloff Steve” Pearce’s nomination to run the Bureau of Land Management along party lines, despite overwhelming public opposition in key states like Montana and Idaho. Pearce’s inadequate ethics agreement, simply transferring his family’s oilfield services business to his wife, positions him to serve executive special interests and himself while overseeing America’s 245 million acres of public lands.
“Every Republican senator in committee who voted to advance Selloff Steve’s nomination betrayed Americans’ public lands birthright and their constituents,” said Save Our Parks spokesperson Jayson O’Neill. “Advancing a conflicted, anti-public lands zealot like Pearce out of committee is a win for extractive special interests and a huge loss for America’s great outdoors. The Senate only has one more chance to reject Pearce and keep our public lands in public hands.”
Pearce makes over $1 million annually from the oil and gas interests he’d “regulate” as BLM Director, the same interests that Doug Burgum met with at least eight times last February alone. The full Senate is expected to vote on Pearce’s nomination in the coming weeks.
