Sen. Steve Daines Obediently Supports Donald Trump’s Newest Anti-Public Land, Pro-Sell Off Crony to Lead the Bureau of Land Management
Steve Pearce Has Spent His Career Doing the Biding of Industry by Trying to Sell Off Public Lands and Deny Public Access
HELENA, MT – Just weeks after joining the bipartisan Senate Stewardship Caucus as a founding member, Montana Senator Steve Daines is singing the praises of long-time industry flack and former New Mexico Representative Steve Pearce, Donald Trump’s anti-public land, anti-public access crony, nominated to lead the Bureau of Land Management. The BLM oversees a quarter-billion acres of public lands in the United States, and Pearce has a long track record of working to sell off public lands and putting monied interests like Big Oil ahead of the American people.
In response to Daines’ betrayal of his “stewardship” values , Save Our Parks spokesperson Jayson O’Neill issued the following statement:
“When it comes to Montana’s public lands, Senator Steve Daines is talking out of both sides of his mouth. One day, he says he wants to keep public lands public – the next day he’s endorsing a nominee for BLM Director who’s spent a career working to sell out America’s public lands. It’s high time for Senator Daines to put Montana’s public lands above party politics. Anti-public land zealots like Steve Pearce belong in a retirement community back in New Mexico, not in a position to help Mike Lee and Doug Burgum dismantle America’s public land.
“If Daines stands by his support of Steve Pearce, dutifully cheering on this sell off nominee to lead America’s largest land managing bureau, his public lands supporter mask is completely off. Any member of the Montana congressional delegation and any member of the United States Senate who truly cares about our public lands, natural heritage, and birthright, must publicly reject Pearce’s nomination to lead the BLM, full stop.”
