HELENA, MT – House Natural Resources Committee Democrats are locking in plans to use their new majority to investigate Interior Secretary Doug Burgum. A committee staffer promised to dig into corruption by Trump “and his enablers, of which Mr. Burgum is certainly one.” The pressure may already be working. New reporting says the coming scrutiny could decide whether Burgum and his political appointees stay, and his hometown paper is now openly asking about his exit strategy. Save Our Parks warned in August that a reckoning was coming.
“Doug Burgum has spent nearly two years dodging accountability while he guts staff, raids park funds for Trump’s vanity projects, and lines up our public lands for data center developers,” said Jayson O’Neill, Save Our Parks spokesperson. “No wonder he’s reportedly eyeing the exit. Accountability is on the docket, Congress is ready to dig, and Burgum has every reason to be nervous. Whether he stays or bolts, he will answer for his fail-by-design agenda, and so will every Trump official who thought the rules and laws didn’t apply to them.”
The top five things that have Doug Burgum quaking:
Data center giveaways. 16 House Democrats sent a letter to Burgum in September demanding answers to questions about Burgum’s efforts to advance data centers. Sens. Wyden, Merkley, and Padilla demanded that Burgum stop efforts to hand nearly 18,000 acres of public lands to private data centers and disclose his meetings with wealthy developers just last week.
Venezuelan gold. Senator Wyden, ranking member on the Senate Finance Committee, is also pressing Burgum for answers on his role brokering a gold deal reportedly linked to payments to a criminal syndicate.
Trump’s costly D.C. vanity projects and Freedom 250. House Democrats have been defending our nation’s beloved parks as Burgum uses park fees to pay for the botched Reflecting Pool, golf course, gilded statutes, White House ballroom, and Trump’s “Arc de Trump” on parkland under no-bid contracts. House Natural Resources Ranking Member Jared Huffman is also prioritizing investigating Burgum’s Freedom 250 LLC pay-to-play dark money influence peddling scheme
Censorship and gutting park and public lands staff. Burgum led sweeping censorship efforts across our national parks and historical sites, attempting to erase history this administration doesn’t like. He also cut national park staff by more than a quarter, with no transparency.
Big Oil ties and monument rollbacks for mining special interests. Democrats plan to probe officials’ oil and gas ties, along with the illegal cuts to Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments.
The rot spreads across the Trump administration and his public lands political team at great cost to taxpayers and Americans outdoor heritage. The Forest Service treated 35 percent fewer acres for hazardous fuels in 2025 while pushing a reorganization that House Natural Resources Democrats strongly oppose. Michael Boren, one-of-the-top appointed officials overseeing the agency, still hasn’t removed an illegal cabin in Idaho’s Sawtooth National Recreation Area nearly two years after being ordered to.
It’s past time for Congress to get to work holding this administration’s corrupt officials accountable. Doug Burgum is responsible for an inordinate amount of the waste and corruption Americans’ overwhelmingly just rejected.
